WHITE SHIRT DAY
National White T-Shirt Day, also known as National White Shirt Day, is celebrated annually on February 11th. It's a day to honor the fight for workers' rights and the Flint Sit-Down Strike, a historic labor action that took place in 1936 and 1937:
The Flint Sit-Down Strike
The strike began in December 1936 and lasted until February 1937. The United Automobile Workers (UAW) went on strike against General Motors in Flint, Michigan to demand better wages and working conditions. The strike ended after 44 days when GM recognized the UAW as the official bargaining representative for hourly employees.
The white t-shirt
The white t-shirt symbolizes the idea that blue-collar workers deserve the same respect as white-collar workers. Before the strike, white shirts were worn by bosses because they didn't get dirty from manual labor.
